He married Mary Grace Gardner (a teacher, 1919–1994) in Grove City, Pennsylvania on October 26, 1945. He went overseas with the unit on Januand served in Tlemcen, Algeria and Caserta, Italy. While stationed there, he was promoted to private 1st class on December 3, 1942. Private Canon was one of eight enlisted men who, with two officers, departed Camp Rucker for Fort Benning, Georgia on Octo(two days before the main body of the unit). He joined the 32nd Station Hospital at Camp Rucker, Alabama on September 3, 1942. Private Canon’s name appeared on a list (dated August 31, 1942) of men assigned from Camp Pickett to the 32nd Station Hospital. He attended training at the Medical Replacement Training Center at Camp Pickett, Virginia. Army in Erie, Pennsylvania on June 18, 1942.
